Home > Linux > My Favorite Distributions

I tested numerous distributions during past years and I always faced the same problems : boring to configure, difficult to install/uninstall clearly applications, lack of automatic steps (eg : creation of menu shortcuts on install), not optimal hardware detection... But I finally found an excellent distribution : Ubuntu. I tested it and finally... not stopped to use it ! This distribution is growing fastly and "supported" by a large community. I'm mainly impressed by his stability and by the Apt-Get package system which allow to install easily applications from online repositories... Currently I've seen round 17000 packages/applications available ! Well honestly there are still some problems. Whatever the distribution use and your knowledge you may have sometimes to "put your hands in the engine" but once configured it should work well !

Ubuntu has a lot of derivatives : Kubuntu (with KDE), Xubuntu (with XFCE), Edubuntu (Education oriented), Fluxbuntu (with Fluxbox), etc...

Ubuntu

Kubuntu

And then get rid of

Windows ! :o)

It exists numerous Linux Distributions for any use : desktop, server, security, multimedia... As I said I tested dozens of of them during last years. But there are some that interested or even impressed me more than others. Recently I was impressed by some of them. Below those I think it is worthto mention :

Damn Small Linux : A tiny but efficient distribution that should always be smaller than 50Mb ! It can be started as LiveCD and/or installed on hard drive. It is an ideal distribution for old machine. I tested it on an old Pentium II (400MHz) laptop with sucess.

DreamLinux : A nice distribution with an amazing Mac-Like look ! Beautiful.

Slax : Excellent and very modular distribution to create your own Live CD fully suitable for your needs !

Zenwalk : I did not tested this distribution deeply but sounds nice. It uses XFCE desktop.

Elive : Live CD that show the Enlightenment desktop in action. I wasn't a fan before but after trying some latest versions I must admit it is quite nice...

But also : SaxenOS, KateOS, Freespire, Puppy, Vector Linux...
