The DistroWatch.com banner states "Put the fun back into
computing. Use Linux, BSD". I initially thought it was a little
bit ambitious or even pretentious. In the past years I installed
and tested numerous distributions and versions. After a few time
I stopped to use each of them for several reasons (daily use difficulties,
install of apps...). But things have changed ! So after years and years of Microsoft Windows use I
finally decided to migrate definitely to Linux. Why ? Here is
the answer :
Powerful
Forget the poor DOS ability,
Unix/Linux shell is
amazing !!! It is even sometimes more pleasant to
work from command line !
Secure & Safe
Access
control is strong and Virus are (almost) unknown ! Any discovered
security hole is rapidly known and fixed shortly by community without
bad will/negociation from an OS vendor... Browse
finally the web without fear to grab evil stuff. I use Linux intensively from years now and I've *never* faced any security/malware/virus problem !
Stable & Reliable
Protect your eyes against the hanging,
ominous and frustrating blue
screens from Micro$oft ! :o) System crashes are
quite rare...
Versatile
It exists dozens of distributions for any purpose
: workstation, server, multimedia studio, graphic,
office etc... There is surely one that suits your needs !
Applications
Thousands of applications exist and most of the time they are free ! Depending the packages manager used you can even update *all* installed applications with a fews clicks ! Can you do this on Windows ? I don't think so ! Of course System updates are also included...
Liberty
Don't be leashed to obscure and financially interested decisions of an OS vendor. Choose and do what you want freely !
Shared & Open
Share the knowledge, Share the resources. Be
a member of large and friendly community ! You will
rarely be alone on a problem...
Free of Charge
The last but not the least : most of the Linux
distributions costs *nothing*,
or at worst, a few tens of dollars/euros. Even in
this case that's still largely cheaper than any
proprietary OS ! That's
a pretty good point no ? :o)
Hope stuff above give you
the wish to try it ! The goal is to solved the Bug
#1 raised by Ubuntu ! ;o)
