The Martinique Island is a French Overseas "Departement".

It is located in the French West Indies (Antilles) at 440 km of the South America shores.

This is a quite small island (75 Kms long and 35 Kms across) but there is a lot of different landscapes : in the north a tropical forest, in the south nice beaches...

The Martinique is also called the Island of Flowers.

.: 03-May-2005 :.

Take off in the middle of the day from Orly airport (Paris)...

Landing at 14h30 in the heat (around 30°C). After taking the car direction the south of the island to the Hotel, at Le Diamant.

.: 04-May-2005 :.

Nice weather to visit the cities and the nice beaches of the south-east of the island. We follow the south coast : Gros-Raisin, Sainte-Luce, Anse Figuier, Le Marin, Sainte-Anne and his nice point of view and until Grande Anse des Salines, probably the most beautiful beach of the Martinique. So after little bath we leave this nice place to start the south of the east coast : Cap Chevalier and his mangrove swamp, Anse Michel to finish with a sundown on the wild Cap Macré...

.: 05-May-2005 :..

Under some intermittent rain, we do a small walk in the Montravail Forest populated with a lot of... Crabs !

After that, departure for the south west of the island. Trois-Ilets, the too much touristic (and so not really typical) Pointe du Bout, Anses à l'Âne, Grande Anse d'Arlet, les Anses-d'Arlets. Then we follow the nice littoral road until Le Diamant. At the end of afternoon, come-back to the nice Grande Anse beach for a small bath...

.: 06-May-2005 :.

Today the visit starts still in the south of the island but into the lands throught Rivère-Pilote and Saint-Esprit. No tremendous things to see in these 2 cities but we follow a pretty road. We join the east cost to the Petit Macabou and then go to the north still beside the shore : Le Vauclin, La Pointe Faula, Le François, Simon Bay, Le Robert... Little bath near Pointe Marin...

.: 07-May-2005 :.

Sunny day to take the Route de la Trace (N3) into the lands and in direction of the north.

At the beginning of this road we visit of the beautiful Jardin de Balata (Garden of Balata). After that we continue toward the north via the Pont de l'Alma (!) until the Morne-Rouge city and and nice view on the (always) fogged Montagne Pelée volcano.

A little farther we stop at Ajoupa-Bouillon to do a "canyoning style visit" of the Gorges de la Falaise, a quite impressive couloir with high rock walls digged by water, and terminated by a nice waterfall. Great !

We rejoin the north-east coast to Le Lorrain and go along it via Le Marigot, Morne Poirier and his nice view on the Caravelle peninsula and La Trinité. We visit the pretty Caravelle peninsula until the end (Dubuc Castel) and come-back to make a stop on the beach of the nice Tartane village at the end of the day.

.: 08-May-2005 :.

After a lot of visits and Kms done, today is a relaxing day ! :o)

Nice weather so we decide to go the the Anses-d'Arlet beach especially for snorkling. On this place there is, at 60/80m of the shore, several rocks under the sea (2/3m only) that provide an easy way to see nice exotic fishes...

.: 09-May-2005 :.

Departure with a Ferry from Anse à l'Âne to Fort de France, the main city of the island. We see some old houses, the Cathedral, the Fort, the Place de la Savane and the nice Scholoecher Library. Also some shopping in the downtown and especially in the cover market.

After coming-back to the Anse à l'Âne, we go to Saint-Pierre in the north via the west shore road to visit the 1902 catastroph museum.

We finish the day on the wild north part of the island : the nice black sand beach of Anse Céron and the end of road (west side) at Anse Couleuvre.

.: 10-May-2005 :.

Quite rainy day and come-back to Saint-Pierre to visit the vestiges of the 1902 catastroph (Theater, Cyparis' cell, Mont-au-Ciel street, Church...).

We take the road again to go into the lands : the Morne-Vert, the beautiful village of Fond-Saint-Denis, the Saut du Gendarme waterfall...

We reach the north coast and follow the road until Grand-Rivière (end of the road on the north-east). Come back via the east shore road.

.: 11-May-2005 :.

For the last complete day we visit one of the most touristic attraction of the Martinique : the Baignoire the Joséphine, a white and high sandbank between two islets with crystalline waters... The real post-card...

We continue the day on the Oscar islet with a lunch and baths...

Come-back to Le Diamant to visit the city, finally ! :o)

.: 12-May-2005 :.

Before leaving we visit one of the most important thing here : a rum distillery ! We choose probably the most famous, the Trois-Rivières. Interesting, shopping and... tasting ! :o)

But it's time to leave, take off at 17h from Lamentin Airport. Landing tomorrow morning at Paris under a grey rainy sky with 9°C...

.: Conclusion :.

Very pleasant island to see with very different kinds of landscape. For a lot of things to do or to simply profit of all the smooth rhythm of the Caribbean Islands...
